My father worked in the mine from the age of 12, he is sadly no longer with me, the love of my life - there were six of us but I was his favourite girl. One evening very late I sat and looked at an old photo of dad and started to sketch with charcoal at first on a sheet of skin tone paper, the sort I use for life drawings - the time went by quickly and before I realised it I had captured things in the drawing I felt I hadnt drawn like wrinkles and dirt in the finger nails.
I went to bed around 5am - when I awoke felt a strong urge to go straight to the drawing, astonished to find it was almost complete I just needed to add a little colour. But the eyes were quite haunting to me - I've had comments saying the same thing. I feel that evening someone helped me produce certain aspects of the painting - as I've never completed anything so quickly or as easily before.
